Fantasy tabletop roleplaying games bring players together to create characters, explore imaginative worlds and develop stories through shared decisions. Daggerheart is a fantasy TTRPG from Darrington Press that combines narrative-focused gameplay with tactical elements, card-based character abilities and its distinctive Hope and Fear system.
What Is Daggerheart?
Daggerheart is designed around collaborative storytelling. Players and the Game Master work together to develop the world, characters and adventures, allowing the direction of a campaign to evolve through the choices made at the table. The game can support both one-shot adventures and longer campaigns.
Understanding Hope And Fear
One of the central mechanics uses two twelve-sided Duality Dice. One represents Hope while the other represents Fear. Players add the dice results and relevant modifiers to determine whether an action succeeds.
The higher die also affects the narrative:
- Hope can provide a player with a Hope resource.
- Fear can give the Game Master Fear to introduce complications.
- Matching results can produce a Critical Success.
- Failed rolls can still change the direction of the scene.
This system connects the mechanical result of a roll with the ongoing story.
Building A Character
Character creation uses cards to represent different aspects of a hero. Ancestry and Community cards help establish a character’s background, while Subclass and Domain cards provide abilities and other options for character development.
This card-based approach gives players an accessible way to keep important character information available during play.
Creating A World Together
Worldbuilding is an important part of the Daggerheart experience. Game Masters can ask players questions about their characters, locations and experiences, allowing the group to contribute ideas that become part of the shared setting.
This collaborative approach can make each campaign feel different because the world develops around the group’s characters and decisions.
Getting Started With Daggerheart
New players can begin with the official Quickstart Adventure, The Sablewood Messengers. The adventure includes five pre-generated Level 1 characters, a five-act story, adversaries, an environment and resources for learning the game.
A new group can start with the basic rules before gradually exploring character progression, campaign creation and more advanced mechanics.
Expanding The Adventure
The Daggerheart Core Set can be expanded with additional content. Daggerheart: Hope & Fear is the first expansion and introduces four new classes, including Witch, Warlock, Assassin and Brawler, along with the Dread domain, new campaign frames, character options and more than 130 new adversaries.
The official website also provides downloads, including print-and-play cards, a Homebrew Kit and additional resources for players and Game Masters.
Creating Memorable Fantasy Campaigns
For groups interested in character-driven storytelling, Daggerheart provides a framework where dice results, player choices and collaborative worldbuilding can continually shape an adventure. Its combination of Duality Dice and cards creates a distinctive tabletop experience centred on the changing relationship between Hope and Fear.
Whether played as a short adventure or an ongoing campaign, the system gives players and Game Masters tools for building a shared fantasy story together.
